Where it began
Founded over 35 years ago by David, the practice was established in Exeter and has since grown into a well-respected structural engineering consultancy serving clients across the South West. The practice is now based in a renovated grade 2 listed barn on the edge of Dartmoor.
James joined the business over ten years ago and now leads the practice, bringing modern engineering expertise alongside the firm’s long-established experience. Bryony supports the team as our in-house architectural technologist and draftsperson, ensuring clear, coordinated and buildable design information.
Together, our team provides clear, independent structural advice and design services for both domestic and commercial projects, with a focus on practical solutions, professional integrity and long-term value for our clients.

At DGCE, we specialise in working hand-in-hand with homeowners and architects to deliver smart, practical structural designs for small extensions, loft conversions and domestic alterations. Traditional expertise, supported by modern technology
Our structural surveys are based on traditional hands-on inspection methods, professional judgement and a clear understanding of how buildings are constructed and behave over time.
Where it adds value, we also use modern inspection technology to support our findings and reduce uncertainty. This includes professional drone surveys carried out by trained staff to inspect roofs, chimneys and other high-level or inaccessible areas, often without the need for scaffolding.
We also use endoscope cameras to inspect cavity walls and concealed areas, and thermal imaging to help identify heat loss, thermal bridging and potential moisture-related issues.
By combining experience with modern diagnostic tools, we provide clear, evidence-based advice and proportionate recommendations, helping clients make informed decisions with confidence.
